Creatine:
Not just a Sports Supplement
Readers of the March 2003 issue of
Life Extension magazine should recall the long list of potential
medical, performance and anti-aging effects of creatine. The article
outlined the substantial body of research that found creatine may
help with diseases effecting the neuro muscular system, such as
muscular dystrophy and may have therapeutic applications in aging
populations, wasting syndromes, muscle atrophy, fatigue, myopathies,
Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease and other mitochondrial
cytopathies.
Insulin
Insulin has two critical roles in
the body that we cannot live without, yet it can be the root of
many health problems, including diabetes. Insulin carries sugar
(glucose), fat and protein into your cells where they are used for
energy and the repair of your cells. When you eat, a certain amount
of the food will be converted into glucose and enter the bloodstream.
As the sugar levels rise, the body senses it and the pancreas secretes
insulin to lower the sugar. This is insulin's second main function.
Vitamin
B-1
Did you know that vitamin B-1 has
two other widely used names? Thiamine is a name used in the US and
Aneurin is the popular name in Europe. Thiamin (without the e) is
also used to refer to B-1. Vitamin B-1 is important to your body’s
health. Find out how important!
It's
in Your Blood
One topic that seems to be a never-ending
source of confusion is blood, or more precisely, understanding blood
work and which tests to get and why. It never fails to amaze me
that the vast majority of bodybuilders and other athletes have no
issue spending literally thousands of dollars on supplements (some
of which have virtually no science behind them to justify their
use) and gym memberships each year, but won't spend a penny on blood
tests to see what's really going on with their hormones and other
indicators of health (e.g., cholesterol, liver function, etc.).
The
role of nutrition in martial arts, police, military personnel
For a considerable amount of time,
nutrition has not played a prominent role in the life of many martial
artists, police, and military personnel as a means of improving
performance. Top athletes are always looking for an edge. Although
the martial arts are more of a way of life and a life style than
a sport per se, the needs of the martial artist are the same as
that of the elite athlete. Mental aspects not withstanding (i.e.
mental awareness, strategy, cunning, etc.), the need for speed,
agility, strength, flexibility, and the ability to recuperate from
tough workouts (and unforgiving sparing partners) is paramount to
the success of athletes and martial artists alike. Police and military
personnel can also have unique requirements that require them to
perform at peak physical and or psychological levels.
